About the Authors
Jennifer Brewin has both co-authored a number of collective creations as well as directed premieres of a vast array of new plays. Jennifer has been in leadership roles at the Caravan Farm Theatre in BC, the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, and at Common Boots Theatre in Toronto. She is currently the Artistic Director of Regina’s Globe Theatre. Jennifer is the recipient of a Dora Mavor Moore Award, a Jessie Award, and The Armstrong Award of Excellence (with Estelle Shook).
Leah Cherniak is a director, actor and teacher. She is the co-founder, along with Martha Ross, of Common Boots Theatre in Toronto. The company has created more than 30 new plays and has an excellent reputation for innovative productions of classics. Leah studied theatre at Ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris. She teaches an intensive clown course for the Ryerson Theatre acting program and the Soulpepper Academy, where she is a resident artist. Leah is also an instructor of directing at the University of Toronto.
Ann-Marie MacDonald is a writer and actor. Her plays include Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet), which won the Governor General’s Award for Drama, Anything That Moves, and The Attic, the Pearls, and Three Fine Girls. MacDonald’s first novel, Fall on Your Knees, was nominated for and won many awards, including the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize, and the book was chosen as one of Oprah’s Book Club selections. MacDonald’s other novels include The Way the Crow Flies and Adult Onset.
Alisa Palmer is a director and writer. Born and raised in New Brunswick, Canada, Alisa Palmer completed a degree in history at McGill University and studied theatre with Jacques Lecoq, Cirque du Soleil, and L’Ecole de Mime Corporel de Montreal, as well as with Augusto Boal. Alisa’s plays include A Play About the Mothers of the Plaza del Mayo and The Attic, the Pearls, and Three Fine Girls (co-created with Ann-Marie MacDonald, Leah Cherniak, and Martha Ross.) Palmer is the former artistic director of Nightwood Theatre, and has served as the artistic director of the English section of the National Theatre School of Canada since 2012.
Martha Ross is a playwright and educator who trained at L’Ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris. Upon her return to Canada, she joined forces with another Lecoq graduate, Leah Cherniak, to establish Toronto’s Theatre Columbus (now Common Boots Theatre). Martha created numerous award-winning plays collectively and collaboratively for Theatre Columbus: The Anger in Ernest and Ernestine, Paranoia, Fertility, The Betrayal, The Attic, The Pearls and Three Fine Girls, and Hotel Loopy, to name just a few. As a solo writer, Martha wrote Porch People, Dr.Dapertutto, And Up They Flew, The Story, The Crack, The Dog and the Angel, and The Bog. Martha teaches the Lecoq method of creation at universities across Canada.
